The Diocesan Archives and Records Management Service (DARMS) safeguards the history and heritage of the Catholic Diocese of Townsville. We preserve significant records, photographs, and artifacts while supporting parishes and agencies in managing information responsibly. Our mission is to protect these valuable assets and make them accessible where appropriate, ensuring they remain a living part of our diocesan story.
Established in 1986 under Bishop Raymond Benjamin, the Townsville Catholic Archives has grown through several locations before moving into a purpose-built facility in Wulguru in 2012, under Bishop Michael Putney. This modern archive provides secure storage for historical records and conservation of sacred artifacts.
In 2024, following a review by Bishop Tim Harris, the service expanded to include records management practices. This strategic shift ensures compliance with contemporary standards and governance requirements while embracing digital transformation to reflect the growing influence of information technologies on how information is created, stored, and accessed.

DARMS holds records relating to the administration of the Diocese since its inception in 1930, along with parish records from as far back as 1864.
To request information, please submit an enquiry in writing using our Request for Information Form below. Requests are processed in accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements, and a small fee may apply for locating and issuing copies of records.
