Joint Statement from Catholic and Anglican Bishops on Sri Lanka bombings
At Easter Christians gather all around the world to celebrate the good news of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Sri Lanka joy has turned to sorrow with the terrorist attacks on churches and hotels. Over 290 people have died, including 102 at St Sebastian’s Catholic Church in Negombo. Another Catholic Church and an evangelical church were also attacked as well as places where tourists and locals gather. It is also understood that two Australians have died in the attacks. At this stage it is claimed that Islamists were responsible and that about 24 persons have been arrested.
We mourn the dead, knowing that the pain of Good Friday now continues. We pray for their families and friends and for all who are injured as they cry in pain and commit ourselves to providing whatever comfort we can. We reject any call for vengeance and along with our Buddhist and Islamic friends reject entirely the idea that violence has any part in our religious calling. We pray for justice and a fair trial for anyone charged with these murders and for repentance by all those involved in these crimes. Above all we pray for an end to violence and for a restoration of peace in Sri Lanka. May the love of God be with all those who suffer and all those who tend to them.
