Today, Fr Dave Lancini has had all charges dismissed by the Magistrate after the prosecution offered no evidence to all charges.
In November 2023 Fr Dave was charged with historic offences dating back to 1969.
Fr Dave had strongly denied any involvement in the alleged offences.
It was pleasing that all charges against Fr Dave have been dropped. Fr Dave has been a Priest of the Diocese for more than 50 years and during that time he has dedicated his ministry to all he encounters.
It doesn’t matter who you are or if you are Catholic or not, Fr Dave connects with all. He is especially supportive of those on the margins. This is a very special feature of Dave.
I feel deeply for all victims and survivors who have experienced harm. Situations like this may cause more harm to those and make it even more difficult for victims to come forward and tell their story.
As Bishop of Townsville, I have been committed to the protection of children and vulnerable adults and have worked tirelessly to ensure that we have procedures and practices in place to protect vulnerable people. We have recently been independently audited on these safeguarding procedures and the final report will be released to the public in the coming weeks.
On the steps of the Townsville Courthouse, Fr Dave gave a brief statement where he thanked all his supporters and his family including myself, Priests, Religious Sisters and Brothers, other ministers from other Churches and members of parishes across the Diocese who had sent him messages of support and supported him.
“I have been a Priest in the Townsville Diocese for over 50 years and in that time, I have wanted to serve the people to the best of my ability, and I believe I have done that” he said.
The Diocese of Townsville continues to publish its safeguarding responsibilities that if any person discloses child abuse, or if any person is concerned about conduct that may amount to a criminal offence, it must be reported directly to the police under the new Failure to Report, Failure to Protect legislation.
