Statement from Most Rev. Tim Harris Catholic Bishop of Townsville
on the death of the Holy Father, Pope Francis
Monday evening, like the rest of the world, I saw the news from the Vatican with the announcement that Pope Francis has died.
He has been a great gift to the Church and world, and he will be greatly missed.
Pope Francis will always have a special place in my heart as he named me the Bishop of Townsville in 2017.
I had the opportunity to meet him on more than one occasion.
Pope Francis believed in humanity and did not give up on anybody especially the “little ones” amongst us.
He cared deeply for the poor and the oppressed.
He worked tirelessly for peace and reconciliation.
He showed us a way to live and he always pointed to Jesus Christ.
Thank you Pope Francis.
The Diocese of Townsville will hold a special Mass for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis on Friday 25 April commencing at 6.30pm at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Townsville. Bishop Tim has invited all people to come and pray and pay their respects to Pope Francis at this special Mass.
The bell at the Cathedral will be rung 88 times prior to the commencement of the Mass as a mark of respect for Pope Francis.
The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference is making available an email address condolencebook@catholic.org.au for anyone wishing to write messages of condolence following the death of Pope Francis.
