What is the Legion of Mary?

The Legion of Mary is a worldwide apostolate of lay people who:

  • Meet each week to pray the Rosary.
  • Read the Legion handbook.*
  • Perform corporal and spiritual works of mercy.

These include:

  • Visiting the sick and elderly.
  • Parish work to restore lapsed Catholics and their children to the practice of the faith.
  • Instruct catechetics.
  • Explain the Catholic Faith to potential converts.
  • Work among the homeless.
  • Visit those in prison.

What are the obligations of a member?

1. Attending a one hour meeting each week to:

  • Pray the Rosary.
  • Study the Legion handbook.
  • Report on work done.
  • Plan work for the coming week.

2. Performing two hours of Legion work each week.

This may include the aforementioned activities as well as:

  • Attending Benediction and other Eucharistic adoration.
  • Attending requiem Masses.
  • Other works as requested by the Spiritual Director.

Why join the Legion?

  • The Legion has the approval and encouragement of every Pope since Pius XI (1933), including Our Lady's own Pope John Paul II.
  • Like our Holy Mother, the Church, the Legion is universal, having spread from Ireland (where it was founded in 1921), to Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America and Australia, so that by 1978 it numbered 1.6 million active members.
  • The Legion of Mary provides a practical way to answer the Second Vatican Council's "Call to Holiness" and to actively participate with our Blessed Mother in her Divine Son's work of Redemption.
  • The Legion of Mary is a vehicle to sanctify as endorsed by the causes for canonisation of its founding members Frank Duff and Alphonsus Lamb.

How can I help if I can't do "active" work in the Legion?

Become an auxiliary of the Legion and pray the prayers on the legion's "Tessera". These include 5 decades of the Holy Rosary, the Magnificat and several other prayers. We need auxiliaries - your prayers are the powerhouse to our work.

*(The Legion handbook is a profound spiritual dissertation on our Holy Mother the Church, her sacraments and our Blessed Mother Mary. The handbook provides a practical guide as to how we can model our lives on Our Lady to work for the salvation of souls and the spread of Christ's Church throughout the world.)
