The Diocesan Liturgical Commission was established in 1982 under the umbrella of the Diocesan Pastoral Council. In 2000, the Diocesan Catechumenate Team merged with the Liturgical Commission and ceased being a sub-committee of the Commission.

Aims Of the liturgical commission

To impart an ever-increasing vigour to the Christian Life of the Faithful through:

  1. Promotion of the full, conscious and active participation of all in the liturgical celebrations

  2. Education into a deeper understanding of the nature of the Church's public worship - the Liturgy - with particular attention to:

    • The Sunday Eucharistic Celebration

    • The pastoral celebration of the Sacraments

    • Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

    • Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest;

  3. To promote the use of sacred music and song in the Liturgy;

  4. To encourage the use of the best available in sacred art and furnishings;

  5. To keep abreast of current liturgical developments in the Church, and to challenge the local diocesan Church to continue its growth and development;

  6. To work in close consultation and co-operation with other Parish and Diocesan Agencies;

  7. To foster the uniqueness of each worshipping community.

Functions of the Commission

  1. To advise the Bishop on liturgical matters.

  2. To keep abreast of the liturgical situation in the Diocese in order to address needs and encourage appropriate development.

  3. To promote liturgical development through:

    • Communication

    • Formation

    • Support for implementation and change

  4. To liaise with Parish Liturgy and Sacramental Teams throughout the Diocese.

  5. To liaise with the National and other Diocesan Liturgical Commissions.

Resources

The Liturgical Commission has produced a number of leaflets and brochures on various liturgical matters. These are for use in parishes and may be copied.
