In April, 2005 the Australian Bishops' Committee for Family and for Life made a recommendation to the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference that the Bishops promote the establishment of Family Councils (in each diocese). The primary focus of each Family Council would be to foster the gifts of families for the evangelizing mission of the Church. The family.life.council was established in the diocese of Townsville by Bishop Michael Putney to support family life in every way it can.

The family.life.council is an advisory council and focal point for communications on family life in the diocese. The council channels its energies into initiatives to promote and support the family life of Catholics and families within our wider community. We recognise the importance of the family as the basic unit of human society and aim to identify areas of strength where families are celebrated and supported, in addition to developing areas within the diocese requiring additional energies and action. Subsequently, four subcommittees have been established since the council formed. These are: family.life.disAbility, family.life.children, family.life.marriage and family.life.communications.

'Listening with Her Heart' - Anna Chandler, Townsville Diocese Familiy.life Council

Eight years ago, Anna Chandler had a virus. The virus resulted in her full hearing loss in her right ear, a condition which has continued to deteriorate each year since in her left ear............."I remember sitting in Mass, feeling sorry for myself when it all started to happen eight years ago. it was all very negative and unclear what was happening. But, somehow, I just drew strength from the youth group and my faith community at home and the people around me, and decided that I have to do something positive with this situation and find the blessings in it."..........

Letter for International Day for People with Disability - a letter from Bishop Terry Brady

'At our baptism, we are welcomed and commissioned to spread the Good News, to produce fruit that will last and to use our God-given gifts. We are all called to witness the life of Jesus Christ through our prayer, our offering and how we share our gifts.......we are challenged and called to be a loving, compassionate and inclusive community: to truly be One Body in Christ.....In the life of our parishes, one of the challenges is to ensure that all people are included in the life of the Church, especially people with disability, their families and friends who support them.'
